Stand-alone backup: Copy the entire %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Pal\Saved\SaveGames folder to an external hard drive or cloud, and do this before upgrading. For private servers, world files, player files, and server settings must be backed up separately, and the server must be stopped before copying to avoid copying to damaged files during writing. It is officially confirmed that 1.0 is not archived, but a complete backup before upgrading across major versions is a zero-risk action, and you can roll back without loss if something goes wrong. This is the highest priority of all preparation steps.
